Tips: home row habits

The home row is your anchor. Strong habits here make every other key easier to reach.

Anchor fingers

  • Rest index fingers on F and J — bump marks help you find them without looking.
  • Keep other fingers curved lightly above their home keys (ASDF and JKL;).
  • Return to home row after stretches to far keys — do not leave hands floating mid-air.

Eyes and attention

  • Keep your eyes on the screen prompt, not the keys.
  • Read ahead one or two words in sentences so your fingers keep moving.
  • If you peek at the keyboard, slow down until you can trust feel again.

Touch and rhythm

  • Use light keystrokes — pounding the board adds fatigue without speed.
  • Aim for even rhythm rather than bursts followed by pauses.
  • Exhale calmly; shoulder tension often shows up in choppy typing.

Drills that reinforce home row

Pangrams and course lines on Funny Dogs Typing force regular returns to common letters. Words mode builds confidence on high-frequency keys. Even five minutes focused on home row accuracy pays off across every other mode.
